The rhetoric of the Westboro Baptist Church is just so off the charts, and picketing soldiers' funerals is just so incendiary, I'm dead sure, when all is said and done, it'll come out that they are double agents, working for "our side," doing their best to divide the religious right and turn them against one-another--and for that reason, we can smile at this.
i understand the impulse to conclude that these peoploe are so over the top, they must be camp. but the truth is, they mean every word.
you should check out the family history. a lot has been written about the Phelpses -- by other Phelpses (several of his kids have been banished). these people, sadly, are the real deal.
I *do* agree that they help our cause much more than they hurt it, however, because their existence causes more reasonable people with homophobic tendencies to reevaluate.
there was apparently a time in her life when she almost escaped. she left the compound and lived for a time with the brothers who were eventually banished. she went back, but they escaped. physically, at least.
it's a really interesting book (not well-written, mind you, but interesting). you can google it: phelps, brothers, banished. something like that will get you to it.

I think Shirley Phelps is one of the scariest people on the planet. Her eyes are just... dead. Like a zombie.
Being a member of the undead is the only way I can figure that people are capable of so much hate. It's completely incomprehensible to me.
